The mid-size sedan space has been reignited in 2026 with facelifts introduced for the Honda City and Skoda Slavia. The former is one of India’s longest-running nameplates and is currently in its fifth generation, whereas the latter was introduced much later in 2022. If you’re the type of consumer who prefers sedans, which between the City and Slavia delivers better real-world performance? For this comparison, we’ve picked the City’s sole petrol engine and the Slavia’s smaller 1.0-litre TSI mill with their respective automatic gearboxes.

Thanks to a higher torque output, it’s the Slavia that grabs the lead from the get-go, but the City isn’t too far behind. The Skoda increases its lead minutely as speeds rise, reaching the 100kph mark quicker by 80 milliseconds. The timing gap between the two cars remains the same even at 120kph, with the Slavia and City taking 15.40 seconds and 16.20 seconds, respectively. The Slavia performs better partly because its torque converter gearbox holds the engine within its core powerband for a longer period.

Autocar India’s testing standards

Before we conduct our performance tests, we check and maintain tyre pressures based on the manufacturer’s recommendations and ensure the car has a full tank of fuel. The car is then tested in a controlled environment with two people on board, and the data is collected via highly accurate GPS-based timing equipment.
